You might be surprised to know that a number of activities that we usually engaged in at home are actually responsible for our back pain. For example certain sexual positions may add stress to your back, especially if you have already had previous back injuries or pain. You should discuss this with your partner or let your partner be aware of this before you engage in sexual activities.
Other home activities that may lead to back pain include the manner in which we lift or push furniture and other objects around the house. One way to address this is take the correct approach when doing any of the above. To minimize back injury pain or to avoid aggravating an existing back condition, follow these 4 rules when lifting an object:
- Never bend or lift from the waist with legs straight.
- Lower your body by bending your knees, keeping your waist straight. It’s best to use your thigh muscles and not the muscles of your back when lifting.
- The object should be held close to your body after you have lifted it.
- Avoid twisting your body while you lift.
Home Back Pain Relief
For home back pain relief from acute muscle strain, you may use aspirin, heat pads, back massage, and or muscle relaxants. It may also be necessary to include bedrest. However, whenever you are lying, the best position to be in, is the fetal position(lying on your side with knees pulled up). If you have to lie on your back, make sure you place a pillow under your knees so that they are higher than your hips. A firm mattress is highly recommended for everyone, especially those who suffer from back pain.
However, the best approach for both short and long term back pain is to strengthen and protect the back muscles through special exercises, along with maintaining correct posture.
